UBS General Secretary emphasises achievements of Catholic collaboration - and the scale of the remaining task
The General Secretary of United Bible Societies (UBS), the Rev Dr Miller Milloy, has emphasised the scale of the task still to be done in translating the Bible into the languages of the world. In an address today to the Synod of Catholic Bishops at the Vatican, which has as its theme The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church, Dr Milloy said that it had been gratifying during the past 40 years to see 134 UBS translations completed in collaboration with the Catholic Church.

Pope Benedict to lead marathon public Bible reading Pope Benedict XVI is to be the opening reader in a continuous public reading of the entire Bible due to be held in Rome in October and broadcast in its entirety on television. According to the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, the Pope's participation is ''an appeal to the Catholic Church to go back to studying and deepening its knowledge of the holy Scriptures.
The Year of Paul
His Holiness Benedict XVI has declared the year June 2008-June 2009 as the Year of Paul, or Pauline Year – celebrating the 2000th anniversary of St Paul’s birth. In announcing the event, His Holiness invited all to welcome the ecumenical dimension of the Pauline Year, affirming that “the Apostle to the Gentiles, who was especially committed to taking the Good News to all peoples, left no stones unturned for unity and harmony among all Christians.”
